Go From 1:1 to 1:Many by Designing Your First Online Learning Experience with Emily Walker

Education is one of the strongest ways we can empower people in their own lives. Most of the time when people launch a new business as service providers, it’s in a one-to-one structure. But we can have so much more impact, and empower more people, when we move to a one-to-many structure and amplify how we teach.

This is exactly why I wanted to talk with Emily Walker. She’s the founder of Modern Leaders Collective. Emily uses online courses to help entrepreneurs create courses for their own businesses. By creating these courses, she is able to reach a much broader audience than she would with one-on-one coaching, and she helps her clients do the same.

In her career as an educator, Emily has seen that the strongest courses are usually created by people who have worked with enough clients that they can start to see the patterns in their habits, obstacles, and pain points.

One of the biggest things she’s learned over time in her business is that it’s OK to launch something that’s not perfect. You can always iterate on your product or course. Spend your time intentionally building the journey so that you know you’re going to get your clients results. Giving people high quality, actionable information is more important than production value.

Emily is extremely passionate about what she does as an educator and her efforts to empower people. I learned so much in my conversation with her and I know that you will, too!

“What we’re doing as educators is we’re sharing our knowledge and our passion with the world so that we can make a difference.”

In this episode Emily talks about:

  • How online courses are helpful to entrepreneurs.
  • Common mistakes entrepreneurs make when creating their first online learning experience.
  • How online courses don’t need to look perfect in order to convey good and helpful information.

Main Takeaways

  • Education is one of the strongest ways to empower people. Educating usually starts on a one-on-one level, but there comes a point where we can’t take on any more clients. By recognizing similar patterns between clients, you can start to develop an online course built for a larger group that caters to their needs.
  • A common mistake entrepreneurs make while creating their first course is designing content before planning action. It is important to have a clear direction in mind so that clients will know what actions they need to take to get from point A to point B.
  • Build the course around you and your clients, instead of just looking at what other online courses feature. Tailor it to the needs and uses of your clients and yourself.
  • Online courses don’t need to look pretty. Your job as a course leader is to get your clients the information they need. As you continue teaching the course, you can start making your material look nicer or tweak things that didn’t work. What you have to say is more important than how professional your course looks.
